This year's theme Opportunity Please Knock is a tribute to the late, great artist and activist Oscar Brown Jr. His daughter, acclaimed vocalist Maggie Brown, and Morris Gearring, star of the one man show Something About Oscar will perform with the kids!
Like The Happiness Club, Oscar Brown used the arts as a tool for change. This was most evident in the numerous stage shows which addressed social issues that he wrote and directed in his native Chicago. The most famous was Opportunity, Please Knock, created in 1967 with members of the Blackstone Rangers, in an effort to both cool down the gang violence on the South Side and give exposure to teens who had ample talent, but little opportunity.
Other surprise guests will also take the stage. As you know, this event raises the majority of the funds needed for the entire year. All of the money raised is used for singing and dancing lessons, creating new material, music videos, recording sessions and rehearsal space rental.
This year The Happiness Club returned to The White House to perform at the Easter Egg Roll, was featured on every Chicago television station, and continues to perform for kids living in at-risk neighborhoods. Be sure to click HERE to see the latest video clips of the kids in action!
